Smoke and Acoustic Seals

Millmerran has extensive experience in the field of smoke and acoustic seal design and manufacture, particularly for architectural door assemblies.

Under the recognized test and approval procedures for doors, a good acoustic seal will always make a good smoke seal as well, but the reverse is not always the case. While they are typically located in the same position in a doorway, it is actually much harder to design a seal that is an effective barrier to sound waves than it is to design one that is an effective barrier to smoke.

The challenge becomes even more difficult when taking into account the need to minimise the forces required to open and close a door leaf against the natural resistance offered by the sealing system, particularly in the case of children or disabled persons.

Millmerran has comprehensively addressed the associated technical issues and has carried out comprehensive testing under the conditions of the relevant British, European and International standards to verify the performance of our products.

Remember, too, that it is now mandatory to fit some form of smoke seal at the threshold area of a fire door assembly, where previously this was often ignored, and seals were fitted to the head & jambs only. Architectural acoustic doors, on the other hand, have always incorporated a threshold seal, without which no meaningful sound reduction can be achieved at all.
